What To Feed An Italian Greyhound

When you check out the food section at your supermarket or pet store, you will probably be overwhelmed. There are so many different brands, formulas, flavors, and types of food that it’s hard to know where to begin. In this article am going to take through the type of health food you should feed your Italian Greyhound.1.

DRY FOOD (KIBBLE)

Nutritionally complete dry food should be the staple of your Italian Greyhound’s diet. Chose a high quality brand, and select the formula that is appropriate for your dog’s age and activity level. Less expensive brands sometimes substitute with substandard ingredients that are not useful for your Italian Greyhound . Crunching on dry food will also help keep your dog’s teeth clean; as he chomps, the rough edges will scrape along his teeth helping to keep them free of tartar.

2. CANNED FOOD

Canned food is much more expensive than dry food, and many kinds contain up to 70 percent of water. Many kinds of canned food are not nutritionally complete and are meant to be served with dry food, so again, i suggest you make sure you read the label. If it does not say “complete” or “nutritionally complete” it is meant to complement dry food. Because canned food is soft and moist, it does not help keep your Italian Greyhound’s teeth and gums in good condition. A popular way to get the benefits of kibble and the added palatability of canned food is to serve one third canned food with two thirds dry food. Remember to refrigerate canned foods once it has been opened.

3. SEMI-MOIST FOOD

Semi moist food is often colored and packaged to look like hamburgers. This means nothing to the Italian Greyhound, and is designed to attract the owner (who is doing the purchasing). Semi moist foods end to have large amounts of sugar, salt, artificial colorings and preservatives. If your choose to feed this kind of food to your Italian Greyhound, consider offering small bits as a treat rather feeding large quantities as a meal. Another ploy designed to attract you is that semi moist food often comes packaged in individual servings. While this can be very useful (while traveling, for example) try packaging single portions of your Italian Greyhound’s usual kibble in sealing sandwich bags instead.

4. WATER

Always, always have fresh water available for your Italian Greyhound . Check the water bowl at least twice a day to make sure he has a good supply. Change the water and thoroughly rinse the bowl daily. If your dog will be outside for any extended period, make sure he also has access to clean water there.

5. SNACKS, TREATS AND SUPPLEMENTS

Dry dog biscuits are useful as treats between meals or during training sessions. Like kibble, hard biscuits are good for your Italian Greyhound’s teeth and will help control tartar.

Other healthy treats you can feed your Italian Greyhound include bits of fruit or steamed vegetables, like grapes, apples, carrots and broccoli. Italian Greyhound can be prone to obesity, so I suggest you keep treats to minimum. When you are reckoning your Italian Greyhound’s daily caloric intake, don’t forget to include treats as well. Offer little tidbits – a small piece of biscuit instead of the whole thing.

Something you may notice as your Greyhound ages, is that they can some times develop arthritis. You can often combat this issue through a healthy diet, however sometimes you need to provide some kind of supplements. Dog Glucosamine is a great option and often contains MSM or Chondroitin as well.

The most important thing to your Italian Greyhound is that you are praising him and offering a reward.

How to Care For A Greyhound

Greyhounds were originally bred as hunting dogs to chase wild animals such as foxes, hare, deer etc. Greyhounds with their slim body and a height that varies between 68 centimeters to 76 centimeters can be referred to as the athletes among the dogs. These runners can reach a full speed of 43mph, hence they are bred and trained for racing and hare/lure coursing.

So are these sprinters good as home pets? Definitely!!!

Greyhound is one of the most intelligent and obedient breeds of dog. They are very friendly and docile. The most important fact that you need to look into is, they are highly sensitive’. So think before you rebuke him/her. Since his/her behavior is very child-like they are not aggressive towards strangers.

So let’s look into tips and tricks on how to take care of a Grey Hound.

The Introductory Jitters:

First thing you need to remember is your dog is new to you and your environment. She/He is yet to trust you. So, ensure that you take slow steps and be calm and assuring at all times. Always talk to her/him in soothing voices and give her/him the confidence that you are going to be there for her/him always. Slowly once you have gained her/his trust, you will start seeing his natural traits showing up, for instance: hiding your stuff or smiling at you which is a very natural thing for a greyhound to do. They are known to give out big smiles.

 Diet:

Grey Hounds are naturally thin. So do not underestimate their lean physique to be underfed. You need to feed them twice a day with food that is enriched with proteins. If you have a greyhound puppy then feed them thrice a day and gradually reducing it to twice as they grow up and not more. It is better to feed a greyhound on a platform since their bowls must be raised. Do not forget to give them their occasional treats.

 Exercise:

Like we called out earlier, greyhounds are
athletes hence fitness is a major point to look into. Exercise is not just a
way to fitness but they also give you the bonding time with your pet. They must
be taken for walks at least thrice a day. One thing to keep in mind is that
these dogs are runners and they do not know how to behave in a street
initially. So have them on a leash which you must make sure is completely under
your control. Since they can get easily distracted and run off after smaller
animals.

Be the Master:

One quality irrespective of the breed of dog is letting them know that you are the master. Appreciate him/her with words and gestures when he/she does the right thing. This way you are letting them know
that doing certain stuff will make you happy and will always try to keep you
happy. Since they are very sensitive you need to be careful in disciplining
him/her. When he/she does something bad like peeing indoors or chewing stuff,
all you have to do is lower your voice and tell him/her or what a bad boy/girl
he/she has been. Leave them alone very much like you do with a kid to let them
think it over.

 Health:

This is the most important aspect for every pet. Even though greyhounds are known to be healthy pets you must always take
him/her to regular health checkups since they are also prone to be sick.

Some additional Tips to take care of your Greyhound:

·With a greyhound, you can bid all your worries about house training them. House training a greyhound is quite easy since this breed is extremely known for its obedience and docility.

·Greyhounds needs a bath only when he/she gets dirty since these dogs do not stink easily compared to other breeds. But regular grooming session like brushing and petting is necessary.

·They are very lazy hence like every couch potato they look for very soft, squishy and comfortable place to lie down. So ensure their bed is extremely comfortable and soft.

How Much Exercise Does a Greyhound Actually Need?

There is no doubt about the fact that greyhounds do make fantastic pets! Being intelligent, affectionate as well as tidy canines, they can act as the perfect companions of human beings. In spite of being large dogs, greyhounds are typically submissive as well as unobtrusive in nature. They are usually healthy breeds having a lifespan of approximately 12 to 14 years. Unlike most of the other dog species, greyhounds usually do not suffer from any kind of serious ailments although tick-borne diseases can often affect them at various stages of their lives. Consequently, it is important for a greyhound to perform workouts on a daily basis so as to avoid all these conditions. In the following paragraphs, we will discuss the topic: how much exercise does a greyhound need?

A typical greyhound is going to spend the majority of his time within your residence either unwinding or enjoying a nap. However, it is imperative for him to burn off his energy by either having a stroll in the park or by running in your backyard. In fact, these dogs require a minimum of one hour of workout on a daily basis. Even though workouts are definitely acceptable, these pets will get much more physical and mental stimulation by walking daily for at least 1 hour. This will likewise aid in developing a bond between the owner and his pet.

Your residence will play a major role in figuring out the workouts needed by your pet. In case you reside in an apartment or condo without any yard, your greyhound will require approximately 2 to 3 short walks every single day along with at least one long walk. Your pooch will likewise enjoy running within a completely enclosed area several times every week.

Since greyhounds tend to be sprinters and not long-distance runners, it will be advisable for you to begin with a one-mile jog along with your pet and then increase the distance gradually. As a matter of fact, the health of your pet can suffer in case he is not in top condition while running long distances.

Moreover, it is imperative to monitor your pet regularly for any sign of overheating or fatigue while performing these exercises. Dogs usually suffer from heat exhaustion and it can happen during a walk or even while sprinting in your yard. It is recommended to carry some water along with you in case your pooch becomes overheated. Canines are known to cool themselves by panting. However, if panting is not able to minimize his body temperature adequately, he might suffer from heatstroke. Look for any indication like heavy panting, vomiting, dizziness, and so on while he is standing. In case you observe any of these indications, it will be advisable to provide your pet with some water which will help him to alleviate the condition. Also, bear in mind to take the help of a vet immediately.

Make sure not to walk your canine in the heat. It will be prudent for him to go for a stroll early in the morning or in the evening when the temperature is comparatively less. Greyhounds are also known to suffer from sunburn. It will be sensible to apply sunscreens intended for the children to the skin of your pet; however, make sure to keep your canine in the shade whenever feasible.

If you and your pooch become somewhat bored with the same workouts day after day, it will be better to provide him with new activities that will help to invigorate his spirits. As a dutiful owner, it is important for you to comprehend the value of exercise for your greyhound as well as exactly how much workout will be appropriate for him.

Arthritis In Greyhounds

Just like humans, our dogs go through old age with a fair amount of challenges. From minor conditions such as lethargy and loss of appetite to life-threatening infections such as cancer, the old age is indeed a trying time in the lives of our furry friends.

One of the most common health conditions among ageing dogs is arthritis. In this post, we shall narrow down our focus to arthritis in Greyhounds.

What Causes Arthritis In Greyhounds?

Arthritis in greyhounds comes about as a result of damage and breakdown of joint cartilage. As you probably already know, cartilage is the cushion that lies between the bones so when it gets damaged, the bones are directly exposed to one another. It is the resultant abrasion effect that leads to pain and inflammation in the joints of your greyhound.

There are many factors that could lead to the wastage of cartilage in the joints. The main ones include chronic infections or major injuries to the joints, normal weight-bearing that happens throughout the dog’s life and joint malformations that result from poor dieting and inactivity. Among the many dog breeds out there, greyhounds are the most prone to old-age arthritis because they are large-breed dogs that are also used in racing activities.

Symptoms

Arthritis in greyhounds will manifest in various ways. You might notice stiffness when your dog is walking, inability to jump over hurdles, reluctance to climb the stairs, difficulty in rising and occasional cries during movement.

It is important to remember that these symptoms will also depend on the severity of the condition. Some greyhounds may be rendered totally inactive due to stiffness and painful joints. They may become temperamental and could be easily agitated as the pain becomes unbearable. This is why it is important, as a dog owner, to ensure the condition is addressed right at the onset of the first symptoms.

How Can You Deal With It?

One of the most natural ways to deal with arthritis in greyhounds is by monitoring the weight of the dog. This can be done in two ways; feeding it with supplements that contain fewer calories and talking it for a walk every day. When it comes to feeding, you could opt for raw foods that are rich in healthy oils such as organic coconut and salmon. A 15-20 minutes’ walk done 2 or 3 times a day will help your greyhound to remain just active enough to keep weight gain at bay.

In addition to good feeding and exercise habits, you could also use certain anti-inflammatory and joint supplements to help with pain relief. It is always advisable to opt for home remedies or all-natural solutions when choosing the best anti-inflammatory supplement and one that deserves a mention here is Yucca. There are plenty of joint supplements and a little research online will introduce you to some renowned brands. When choosing such a supplement, look out for those that contain higher levels of chondroitin, Vitamin C, MSM and Glucosamine.

When the condition is so severe, then more intensive measures can be taken such as acupuncture and the administration of cold laser.

Remember…..

Most greyhounds have arthritis and suffer in silence because the symptoms do not always show. As a responsible dog owner, it is important to take it out to regular clinical checks at a veterinary clinic for any possible diagnosis of this debilitating condition.

All About Italian Greyhounds

With a weight between the range of 7 to 14 pounds, the Italian Greyhound is an amazing breed of dogs. Unlike the original greyhounds, Italian Greyhounds have an ancient heritage and have shrunk in size over the years. The typical Italian greyhound will often measure only 13-15 inches in height. But for some strange reason, their small stature is often commented as one of their most adored features.

Another reason for the popularity of this breed is its beautiful warm personality. It is more suitable as a companion instead of an outdoor dog for hunting or surveillance.

Italian greyhounds have an unusually short jacket (or coat). However, this can also be a disadvantage because it is subject to damage because it has a thin skin. That is the reason why one should be careful with physical exercise and not let an Italian greyhound enter shrubs or bushes that might have thorns protruding from them.

The coat contains fine, short hair that looks extremely beautiful. It has the same brightness that you would merely discover in the regular greyhound. The requirements of the Italian greyhound coats must be maintained so that it retains its shiny appearance.

Due to their shy personality, Italian Greyhounds are not quite large guard dogs. They are more suitable as family pets and can be stored in smaller houses, such as apartments.

Despite his meek personality, the Italian greyhound could be pretty bad. Like most other dog breeds, this requires patience, as it can break the elements of the home when in a mischievous mood.

The character of the Italian greyhound is such that he will not have the ability to survive like a dog in a pet hotel. Instead, it will depend on your teacher for friendship and companionship. The Italian greyhound is more likely to be sad or sad if it is mistreated or treated much less favorably. Remember that this dog is as sensitive as it is in its physical form. This dog is indeed not appropriate for an individual who has a hectic lifestyle.

The Italian Greyhound has swift reflexes and can move genuinely fast. That is why we see many people who use them for skill tests and careers. The Italian Greyhound is used for two essential purposes around the world.

Over time, the Italian greyhound has become a very preferred breed of dogs and never again identifies in the Italian royal houses. It is a pure race to train and discipline due to its gentle and social personality. However, it is also an extremely energetic dog and requires standard physical exercise and a healthy eating routine.

There is a difference of opinion as to whether the Italian greyhounds were bred for the first time to hunt small entertainments or if they were meant to be pets and companions. They have fulfilled both roles, which makes them easily adaptable to life in the city or the countryside. On his side that appreciates the city, the Italian greyhound is happy resting in the house or curled up on a deck or in the lap of its owner. However, its worshiper side of the country enjoys exercise and outdoor activities when it is not too hot or too cold.

Here I wanted to post about my new Italian greyhound puppy! Isn’t he cute? I’ll be talking more about my life and the thins going on in it here on my blog. My first love, though, is Italian greyhounds… hence the name of the blog 🙂 Here’s a cute video of us:

Italian greyhounds make great pets, but enough about my enough puppy. I have another things I’m trying out this week. I’m also testing out some garcinia cambogia, to see how well it works. When I told some friends, they were really curious to see how effective it is so I think I’ll talk about it on here next week once I see how I do with it. I’m no going to change anything else about my diet or exercise with my dog except the garcinia cambogia so that I can have as accurate a test as possible.

If I do a lot of other stuff too, it will be hard to differentiate what actually did what.
